What type of therapy do you use?

In my outpatient private practice, I custom tailor unique, yet scientifically sound interventions for my clients. I believe the overarching goal of therapy is to inspire lasting change to enjoy more of life. Typically, the model of treatment I use depends on the nature of the presenting problems. I will always be able to discuss any questions you have about therapy. With that in mind, the therapy models I use most frequently include Emotion-Focused Therapy, Emotionally Focused Couples/Family Therapy, T.E.A.M CBT, and Advanced Brief Strategic Therapy.

When can I expect results?

Results are one of the most important markers of quality therapy. Though each situation is different, by the end of the first or second session, I should be able to provide you with a better idea of when you may experience results. My estimate considers information about your situation, my experience, and research. At times we can measure progress using a combination of your report, my observations, and measurements related to what brings you in.

What should I expect in our first session?

In our first session, I will provide you with some information and get to know what brings you in. Actually, the first few sessions are spent really getting to know one another and for me to understand how you would prefer your life to be after therapy. As I see it, I work for you and strive to provide you with a valuable experience. Overall, it is my hope that you leave the first session feeling some small sense of hope or with some valuable new information about your situation not otherwise found on the internet or in a book.

How do I know you are able to help me?

Understanding you serves two purposes. First, it helps me plan and deliver high-quality treatment. Second, it ensures that I am competent to provide therapy given your situation. There is no therapist proficiently trained and experienced to treat ALL conditions. In the event that your situation falls outside of my area of expertise, I will let you know immediately. I can then provide you with referrals to a few therapists with more proficiency given your situation.

Where do I start to explain whats happening?

Sometimes clients have a lot to say. Often when situations are complex, clients put a lot of pressure on themselves. They may worry about “where to start” or how to even articulate their situation. In such situations, it is refreshing to know that there is no “perfect” place to start. I will help provide a basic framework by asking valuable questions that helps me to best understand your situation.

Do you give homework?

Again, I will offer the lawyer answer, “It depends!” Some situations, for example, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or Phobias require a more action-oriented approach in order to enable the best possible treatment outcome. What this means is that I will offer tasks or experiments specifically designed to interrupt the self-feeding, vicious cycle associated with such conditions. When I do formulate a task it is always done collaboratively. I always check to ensure the tasks are reasonable, ask about any hesitations, and provide a solid rationale. Therapy is not about twisting clients arms, pressuring them, or insisting!!!! It is known that forcing clients to do anything is not part of effective therapy.

Other times, clients want tasks or books to read in order to “boost” sessions. When this is the case, I have a comprehensive list of tasks, experiments, readings, podcasts, and even youtube clips to further enhance your therapeutic experience.

What are your thoughts on medication?

I support medication prescribed by a qualified, competent medical doctor when it provides a benefit. In many conditions, the correct medication can profoundly reduce symptoms and aid in recovery.  At the same time, it is important to keep in mind that medication is one treatment approach that specifically intervenes on a biological level. There is no medication on the market that can heal relationships, build a secure connection, or assist people in coming to terms with themselves. Medication is beneficial when it is prescribed by a medical doctor who is knowledgeable about various psychotropic drugs and mental health. It is important that you keep in contact with your doctor about any concerns you may have about medication.

In the event that you believe medication may provide a benefit, I would be happy to provide you with a list of knowledgeable medical doctors and discuss how to approach them and what to say.

What are your thoughts on diagnosis?

Diagnosing is important because labels provide a common language, inform treatment, and guide research. On the other hand, labels seldom solve the problem they describe. Sometimes a diagnosis is used against a person. Stigmatizing is an unfortunate result of fear combined with ignorance.

It is important to separate the diagnosis from the person. You are not symptoms; you are affected by symptoms. Part of our work together will focus on understanding not only what the symptoms are, but also how they operate in your life.

I believe a person character should not be defined by an absence of difficulty but, rather, what they choose to do during such times. Taking the first step is one of the bravest things a person can do.

Where are you located?

My office is conveniently located off the 50 freeway at 100 Iron Point Cir #136, Folsom, CA 95630. Sometimes my clients want to arrange phone sessions or meet at another location which can be arranged.

How can we begin?
