The majority of my work with couples focuses on improving the quality of their relationship. I use Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) to heal relationships and improve the quality of the connection. EFT is a specialized, researched-based approach which has been proven to help 70% of couples completely recover from relationship distress and has been shown to produce positive results 95% of the time.
A Focus on Connection
Couples see me for a variety of reasons including difficulty communicating; arguments around money, sex, parenting, and family; past wounds impacting their current relationship; affairs; and misunderstandings.
My primary goal when working with couples is to promote long-term change in how partners experience their relationship. A connection is essential for survival and paramount to psychological well being.
When individuals experience their partner as available, caring, responsive, and accepting, their relationship is a source of security. A strong connection helps regulate emotion, reduce stress, promotes individuality, and enhances effective decision making. This is not to suggest a conflict-free relationship, however, a secure bond provides comfort during times of threat or distress.
When partners experience their relationship as secure the content of problems ceases to carry so much weight. Suddenly, the toothpaste cap doesn’t matter as much.
Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy has been shown to be helpful in:
- Communicating more effectively
- Transforming negative cycles of interactions
- Healing after an affair
- Identifying new solutions to old locked patterns of arguing
- Moving forward from betrayal
- Protecting against divorce
- Better understanding yourself and your partner
- Getting your needs met
- Gaining a sense of support and connection
